Conversion Methods

There are three basic methods of converting paper drawings into computer files:

1. Precision Redraw (This is the only method we use at FAVI Design)
2. Scanning
3. Digitizing

1. Precision Redraw is reproducing the paper drawing in CAD by drawing from scratch, using all the information in the paper drawing. This produces a full CAD file with all the advantages of an original CAD drawing. Layering standards, blocks, standard titles, etc. can all be maintained. Accuracy is equal to or better than the original paper drawing. This is the most accurate and useful method for most architectural applications. This is the only method we use at FAVI Design.

2. Scanning produces a bitmap or raster image file. This is usually the cheapest method, especially in quantity, but it has many disadvantages; large file sizes, inaccuracy, "noise" from flaws in the paper drawing. It is not practical to edit the raster file directly although portions can be erased and overlayed with a vector file.

3. Digitizing is tracing a paper drawing into a CAD file using a pointing device and digitizing tablet. On screen digitizing means tracing a raster image (produced by scanning) in CAD. Both methods produce a vector format drawing file. Drawbacks are the high cost and fast obsolescence of digitizers and the inaccuracy of tracing.

How it Works

1. Order Form
Fill out the FAVI Design Order Form and checklist. Carefully review and check all items that apply to your CAD drafting order. This will provide us with the information that we will need in order to proceed with your project.

2. Prepare and Submit your Documents
Scan your documents at 200 dpi and save it as TIFF or JPG format and email them to us at favidesign@gmail.com

3. Initial Payment
Once we receive your project, we will Email you the payment instructions to be completed online through our secure server. A 50% Retainer is needed in order to get the project started.

4. Drafting Process
Once the CAD technician has completed the drawing, the Project Manager oversees the CAD standards and compares it with customer’s paper document, making adjustments as necessary. Each file is plotted and the project manager visually compares it to the original hardcopy document. Unclear elements are clouded and accompanied by queries or comments for clarifications.

5. Progress Set
Once the project is complete, a Progress Set (PDF format) is sent to the client for his approval and comments.

6. Final Payment
Full payment is required prior to the delivery of the final CAD files.

7. Final Delivery
Upon completion of your order, we will either email you or post the AutoCAD DWG files immediately to our website and you can download them to your computer for immediate use. FAVI Design will return all original paper documents supplied by the client.
